During an appearance at the Alabama GOP Dinner on Friday, August 4, former President Donald Trump warned the audience that if the US and NATO stay on their current path, the war between Russia and Ukraine could expand and have a devastating impact on the world. Specifically, he argued that ending the war as soon as possible should be an urgent priority because an expansion of it could have cataclysmic consequences.

Speaking about that, Trump said that he could get the two sides to sit down and find a way to agree on peace, telling the audience, “I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled,.  know ’em both very well. They will settle.”

That would likely involve threatening to withhold aid to the Ukrainians unless they make reasonable concessions to the Russians, and agreeing that the border state with Russia and former breadbasket of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union won’t join NATO.

Continuing, Trump said that he could accomplish that peace process “very, very quickly,” and that he ia the only one who could do it, saying, “I’m the only candidate who can make this promise. I will prevent World War III, and don’t kid yourself — we’re a lot closer to it than you think. A lot closer.

Former President Trump then added that if the war escalated, it wouldn’t just mean tanks rolling over the bloodlands of Europe in vicious armored struggles. It would mean nuclear armageddon, a hydrogen bomb-inflicted holocaust like the world has never seen. “And that would be a war like no other, because we wouldn’t have army tanks going back and forth, shooting. They have nuclear. The levels of power are not to be believed

,” he said.

This speech to the Alabama GOP was similar to what he said in March, when he said, “When I say yes, I will get a settlement very quickly … I will have a settlement within 24 hours. Standing before you today, I’m the only candidate to make that promise. I will stand in the way of the Third World War we are heading for.

Similarly, in a CNN Town Hall, Trump said he wants to end the war to stop the needless bloodshed. “I want everybody to stop dying. They’re dying. Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done in 24 hours,” he said. He added, “I think in terms of getting it settled so we stop killing all these people.

Trump also explained another reason for wanting to end the war during the town hall, saying that America is giving away so much expensive and hard-to-produce military equipment to the Ukrainians that it is leaving itself vulnerable and unarmed. He argued, “We’re giving away so much equipment, we don’t have ammunition for ourselves right now. We don’t have ammunition for ourselves we’re giving away so much.
