Vice President Kamala Harris received flak on social media after she claimed that most Americans would go bankrupt over an unexpected $400 expense while lamenting how difficult it is for American women to get abortions.

On Friday, Harris was speaking in Iowa at a moderated discussion on abortion during which she spoke at length about how women in Iowa will endure economic hardship to travel to another state for a legal abortion now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned.

“If she is a single parent, she’s going to have to be able to pay for that childcare,” Harris said. “She’s going to lose time for work. Maybe she has paid family leave. Maybe she doesn’t. Maybe she has paid sick leave. Maybe she doesn’t. She will have to be able to pay for a plane, train, bus, gas. Most Americans are a $400 unexpected expense away from bankruptcy.”

The comment garnered immediate criticism from conservatives across the internet, suggesting that the hardship placed on Americans was due, in no small part, to the policies that have been enacted after almost three years of Biden.

“Yeah, that’s called Bidenomics and it’s a problem,” GOP presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott responded. “Americans have lost $10,000 in spending power because of the Biden-Harris agenda.”

Harris’ comment likely referenced a 2022 Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households survey released this year, which revealed that nearly 40% of Americans do not have cash on hand to cover a $400 emergency expense and would need to use credit cards or borrow money to cover it.
