Former President Donald Trump responded to new charges levied against him by Special Counsel Jack Smith, claiming the Justice Department’s “abuse” is a politically motivated attempt to interfere with his campaign.

Trump, the leading candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, is facing new allegations of willful retention of national defense information and two new obstruction counts, according to a Fox News report.

“It’s election interference at the highest level,” Trump told Fox after learning about the latest indictment. “They’re harassing my company, they’re harassing my family and by far, least importantly of all, they’re harassing me.”

His campaign claimed the charges result from election interference by President Joe Biden, according to a report from Mediaite.

“This is nothing more than a continued desperate and flailing attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their Department of Justice to harass President Trump and those around him,” a campaign representative said in a statement.

“Deranged Jack Smith knows that they have no case and is casting about for any way to salvage their illegal witch hunt and to get someone other than Donald Trump to run against Crooked Joe Biden,” the statement continued.

The former president called the latest charges unfounded and a product of prosecutorial overreach due to his high polling numbers.

“This is prosecutorial misconduct used at a level never seen before,” Trump said.

“If I weren’t leading Biden by a lot in numerous polls, and wasn’t going to be the Republican nominee, it wouldn’t be happening,” continued Trump. “It wouldn’t be happening.”

“But I am way up as a Republican and way up in the general election and this is what you get,” he added. “This is what you get for leading the 2024 polls.”

Trump suggested the country was suffering from abuse by Biden administration’s Department of Justice, adding hope the Republican Party will be able to do something about it.
